“Not very consistent.” Lavrov shifted responsibility for the breakdown of negotiations with Ukraine to the United States

The Foreign Minister of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation accused the United States of inconsistency and abandonment of previously reached agreements to end the war in Ukraine. He stated this in an interview with RT Arabic, the transcript of which was published by the Russian Foreign Ministry on June 4.

According to Lavrov, at a meeting in Anchorage in August 2025, Moscow agreed with American proposals on the first steps towards ending hostilities and starting negotiations. However, then, according to the Russian minister, Washington allegedly changed its position and stopped promoting these initiatives, shifting responsibility for the settlement to the parties to the war themselves.

In particular, Lavrov criticized the statements of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the US Congress. He said that the United States consistently supports Ukraine and continues to supply arms, and the conflict may not be able to be ended in the near future, since the parties, especially Russia, are not ready to make concessions.

“Instead of promoting the same proposals in relations with Ukrainians, the Americans are now pretending that they will let the parties sort it out themselves. This is not very consistent,” Lavrov said.

He also argues that the United States can no longer be considered a neutral mediator because it openly and consistently supports Ukraine with weapons and military assistance. From this he concludes that the West is allegedly seeking unilateral benefits by delaying the negotiation process.

“The West is not capable of negotiations and acts on the principle: “I will promise here, then I will stall for time, then either the donkey will die, or the padishah…” – as one Arab proverb says. This is a rather dishonest line aimed at receiving, accumulating unilateral benefits, again demanding concessions, and so on,” Lavrov said.
