Patients with diabetes need regular examinations by an ophthalmologist to avoid severe retinal damage. The head of the quality control sector of the Tyumen Regional Ophthalmological Dispensary, Irina Nemtsova, warned about this.
According to the specialist, elevated blood glucose levels can trigger diabetic retinopathy. This is a dangerous condition in which the blood supply to the retina is disrupted, pathological vessels appear and edema develops.
The risk of pathology is directly related to the duration of the disease and how well the sugar level is controlled. As a specialist clarifies to Vslukh.ru, in patients with uncompensated diabetes, signs of retinal damage are almost twice as common.
Diabetic retinopathy remains one of the leading causes of blindness in people of working age and seriously affects the vision of older people.
The expert emphasizes: the success of treatment depends on early diagnosis, even if there are no symptoms. Therefore, all people with diabetes need regular fundus examinations. This allows you to detect the problem in time and select effective treatment tactics.
