Breel Embolo (29), the forward nominated among the 26 players with whom Switzerland goes to the 2026 World Cup, cannot enter the United States, along with Murat Yakin's squad. ESTA authorization – the automated system used for foreigners entering the country – has been placed under administrative review.
The news came as a shock to the Swiss international, as the Rennes striker is seen as a key piece in attack at the final tournament which runs from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
The Swiss federation gave a detailed statement explaining the ban period: “Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is now unable to travel to the United States with the team.

His ESTA authorization had been approved by this morning. However, at 10:30 we were informed that his ESTA application was subject to further review.”
The review of Embolo's eligibility to enter the United States is said to be caused by a legal issue that dates back several years. The striker was involved in an altercation in Basel in 2018, resulting in a court decision in 2023. Breel Embolo was convicted of multiple threats, later receiving a suspended fine following the incident.

“A vacancy, but not for long. Coming soon, Breel Embolo!”
Although the forward had previously entered the US without issue for friendlies against Mexico and the US in June 2025, a recent decision not to appeal the decision makes the sentence final.
This legal status appears to have set off alarm bells in the US Immigration System, leading to the current standoff, days before the start of the final world tour.
But the Swiss Federation remains optimistic that the goalscorer will be able to make it to training ahead of the June 13 opener against Qatar. Officials are in constant dialogue with the US authorities to overcome the administrative hurdle and ensure that the striker will be able to participate in the third World Tour of his career.
A photo of the team's plane with the message of solidarity was posted on the national team's social media accounts: “A vacancy, but not for long. Coming soon, Breel Embolo.”
