A drone hit a nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye. “It's like playing with fire”


On Saturday before 23 International Atomic Energy Agency [MAEA] issued a message about the incident that took place at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye.

“The IAEA has been informed by the Association of Polish People's Republics [Zaporoska Elektrownia Atomowa]”that today a drone hit a turbine building in this area, probably causing a hole in its wall,” the statement said.

The head of the organization, Rafael Grossi, expressed “serious concern about the reported incident, which would threaten both the 7 indispensable pillars of nuclear security during a conflict and the 5 specific principles for the protection of the ZNPP nuclear power plant, which clearly state that there should be no attack from or against the plant,” we read further.

Attacking nuclear facilities is like playing with fire, emphasized the head of the IAEA. The IAEA team at the ZNPP power plant requested access to the affected turbine building to inspect it in person.

The announcement recalled that this was the first drone attack at the power plant since April 2024.
