Training of Ukrainian pilots and technicians to operate Swedish Gripen fighters has already begun. Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonson wrote about this on the social network X on May 28.
He noted that training will gain even greater momentum in the fall and pointed out the advantages of these aircraft.
“Ukraine is not just receiving aircraft. Ukraine is creating a modern Air Force capable of fighting, surviving and adapting to the harshest conditions in Europe,” Yunson emphasized.
The Swedish Minister of Defense informed that deliveries of Gripen to Ukraine are planned to begin early next year, after approval of permits.
“Stronger Ukrainian aviation makes Ukraine safer, Europe stronger and less space for Russian aggression,” Yunson noted.
He added that the transfer of Gripen is part of the 22nd package of Swedish military assistance to Ukraine. Taking into account this package, the total amount of military assistance to Sweden since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion will be approximately €11.8 billion.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced earlier today that Sweden will begin delivering several dozen aircraft to the defense forces at the beginning of 2027. Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Pavel Palisa said that the first batch of Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters will be equipped with Meteor long-range air-to-air missiles.
