Ukraine, after the crashed drone in Galati: “A real threat for the Black Sea region and for the whole of Europe”

The crash of the drone on the Romanian bloc during a Russian attack on Ukraine proves that Moscow's aggression is a threat to the Black Sea region and the entire European continent, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sîbiha said on Friday.

“The recent incursion of a Russian drone into Romanian airspace and its explosion in the residential area of Galati have demonstrated once again that Russian aggression represents a real threat to the Black Sea region and to the whole of Europe,” said the head of Ukrainian diplomacy in a message on X in which he tagged his counterpart, Oana Țoiu.

He added that strengthening Ukraine's air defense is a “strategic task” aimed not only at protecting Ukraine, but also at reducing risks to neighboring countries.

“Strengthening support to Ukraine and intensifying pressure on the aggressor, including through tougher sanctions, remain essential for restoring peace and security in the region. Strengthening Ukraine's air defense is also a strategic task, aimed not only at protecting our country, but also at reducing risks to our neighbors. Ukraine stands with Romania. We are ready to cooperate closely to strengthen protection against such threats,” he stressed Sibiha.

A drone crashed on the night of Thursday to Friday, around 02:00, on a block in the city of Galați, the authorities announced.

The impact was followed by an explosion and a fire in an apartment located on the 10th floor of the apartment building. Two people were injured.

President Nicușor Dan convened a CSAT meeting after the unmanned aerial vehicle crashed and exploded on a block in the center of the city of Galati.

“I strongly condemned this unacceptable violation of Romania's sovereignty. Full responsibility belongs to the Russian Federation, whose behavior shows a total disregard for international law and for the safety of the citizens of a NATO state.

We thanked the Secretary General and Allies for their solidarity and agreed to continue close coordination within NATO to strengthen our defenses and the Eastern Flank, especially with anti-aircraft and anti-drone capabilities. Romania is a strong ally and will not accept that Russia's aggression against Ukraine threatens the security of Romanian citizens”, said Nicușor Dan.
