With the onset of summer, the risk of household injuries traditionally increases – abrasions, cuts, splinters and punctures. Danger may come from working in the country, fishing trips, walks in the forest, as well as riding bicycles, rollerblades and scooters. The Krasnoyarsk Rospotrebnadzor warns: even a minor injury can lead to tetanus infection.
Tetanus is a dangerous infectious disease caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. It produces a toxin that affects the nervous system. You can become infected when soil particles get into the wound. Among the first symptoms of the disease: nagging or throbbing pain in the wound area, increased sweating and irritability.
Later, a person may experience swallowing problems, spasms of masticatory and facial muscles, neck and jaw cramps. In severe cases, spasms of the respiratory muscles and respiratory arrest are possible.
According to experts, the only effective way to protect against tetanus today is vaccination. Children are vaccinated at 3, 4.5 and 6 months, then revaccinated at 18 months, 6–7 and 14 years. For adults, it is recommended to repeat the vaccination every 10 years.
If injured, Krasnoyarsk residents are advised to wash the wound with hydrogen peroxide as soon as possible and go to a clinic or emergency room to treat the injury and urgently prevent the disease.
