The elections in Armenia are getting closer. Donald Trump supports one of the candidates

“The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, great friend and leader, he makes his country strong, rich and very safe! Nikol fully shares my vision of PEACE and PROSPERITY for Armenia and the entire South Caucasus region,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social website.

Trump recalled that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Armenia this week. During the visit, three agreements were signed: on strategic partnership, critical minerals and cooperation on the transit corridor, which is to connect Azerbaijan with its exclave.

Trump's trail through Armenia

A 43-kilometer transit corridor called the Trump Trail for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) is planned to run through southern Armenia. It will provide Azerbaijan with a direct corridor to its exclave, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, and thus to Turkey, which is Baku's closest ally.

The corridor would connect Asia with Europe, bypassing Russia and Iran, Reuters reports. This is important due to the United States' interest in concluding agreements on critical minerals with Central Asian countries rich in these raw materials. In Armenia, the mining of iron, copper, zinc and other minerals is an important part of the economy.

“Soon, the United States and Armenia will jointly launch TRIPP, which will transform the South Caucasus and help our great American energy companies gain access from Central Asia,” President Trump continued.

Trump's full support for Pashinyan

“For these reasons Nikol receives my FULL and TOTAL support in the June 7, 2026 elections. With Nikola's help, we will take the United States, Armenia, the South Caucasus and Central Asia to greater heights than ever before. Let's make Armenia great again – MAGA! – we read in the US president's post.

Under Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Armenia is seeking to strengthen relations with the West. In March 2025, the Act on initiating the accession process to the European Union was adopted. In the parliamentary elections to be held on June 7, Pashinyan's Civic Contract party will face opposition parties, some of which are pro-Russian.
Last August, Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, with the participation of the US, signed the so-called Washington Declaration. They initialed a peace agreement after two wars over Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave in Azerbaijani territory previously inhabited mostly by Armenians. Until the Azerbaijani offensive in 2023, there was an unrecognized republic there, supported by Armenia. As part of the arrangements, the TRIPP project was announced in Washington, and both leaders announced Trump's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.
