North Korea confirms use of AI

According to KCNA, Kim Jong Un stated that the weapons had been successfully modernized to “adapt them to the conditions of modern warfare and increase their combat usefulness.” The missiles are intended to be able to hit targets 100 km away – if deployed near the border, they could reach Seoul.

This is the first time the use of artificial intelligence in missiles has been confirmed. As a military expert from the Asan Yang Uk Institute of Political Studies explains, “the idea is to use artificial intelligence during target recognition and missile guidance.”

Hong Min from the Korea Institute of National Unification believes that the North Korean technology probably involves an improved version of the existing digital guidance system combined with automatic target recognition technology.

Since the end of 2023, North Korea has been supplying Russia with ballistic missiles and artillery rockets, which Moscow uses in its war against Ukraine. The use of these weapons is believed to have provided Pyongyang with valuable battlefield data regarding its arsenal.
