Earlier – on Thursday – the Sejm Rules Committee voted in favor of lifting the PiS politician's immunity. On Friday, in a series of 26 votes, the Sejm voted to lift Ziobro's immunity so that the prosecutor's office could bring 26 charges against him. In the votes, 248 to 261 MPs were in favor of lifting immunity for individual acts, while 184 to 197 MPs were against. Up to a dozen or so MPs abstained from voting.

In a separate 27th vote, the Sejm expressed: consent to the detention and possible temporary arrest of the MP. 244 MPs voted for it, 198 were against, and no one abstained.

The essence of the allegations against Ziobro is: “rigging” competitions for multi-million grants from the Justice Fund. According to the prosecutor's office, Ziobro allegedly acted in order to obtain financial benefits for other people and personal and political benefits for himself, and that he did it together, among others, with his deputies Marcin Romanowski and Michał Wosiem and a PiS MP Dariusz Matecki. In this way, it was intended to act to the detriment of the state and the public interest, limiting access to the fund for authorized entities.

Kaczyński on lifting Ziobro's immunity: I believe that those who participated in it will answer to the court

PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński – referring to the abolition of the immunity of the MP of this party, former head of the Ministry of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro, by the Sejm – admitted that he expected this. He added that he believed that “all those who participated in this will answer to the court.”

“I expected it, it is exactly as one could expect,” PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński told journalists in the Sejm on Friday evening.

According to the head of PiS, “we are dealing with a government that does not know how to govern, tolerates the brazen theft of people caught red-handed, exempts them from criminal liability, and wants to fight fiercely against those who do things that harm the criminal world.” Kaczyński said that “it cannot in any way be denied that when it comes to Zbigniew Ziobro, he made a lot of such attacks.”

Referring to Friday's decision of the Sejm, Kaczyński also said that “this is normal, you can say that those who represent foreign interests here should be like this and this is what they are, this is what their principals expect from them.”

When asked what the prosecutor's office should do next in the Ziobro case, he said that “it will be possible to talk about it when the prosecutor's office is there.” According to Kaczyński, “today there is no prosecutor's office.” “I believe that it may take some time, but all those who participated in it will answer to the court, and today will certainly increase the sentences,” he said.

Tusk on the lifting of immunity Ziobrze: Poles saw that the settlements had become a fact

Poles saw that the settlement had become a fact – said Prime Minister Donald Tusk after the Sejm's decision to lift the immunity and authorize the detention and temporary arrest of the former head of the Ministry of Justice, PiS MP Zbigniew Ziobro. The head of government emphasized that he was satisfied with the actions of the Minister of Justice, Waldemar Żurek.

– I do not have any need for retaliation or revenge, I have a great need (…) for politicians to feel responsible for what they do and to be held accountable, especially when there is a justified suspicion, as we see after the conclusions of the prosecutor's office, that they have committed a number of serious crimes – the Prime Minister told journalists after the Sejm's decision regarding Ziobro on Friday.

The head of government assessed that “from the point of view of Poland's interests, there is nothing to be happy about, because it does not look good at all,” but from the point of view of the interests of Polish democracy, the lifting of Ziobro's immunity “is very important.” – Poles saw that it was a very winding road, it took a lot of time, but that settlements are becoming a fact – added the Prime Minister.

When asked to assess the actions of the head of the Ministry of Justice and the prosecutor's office in this case, he replied that he was “very satisfied” with it. (PAP)
