Liviu Negoiță, former mayor of Cernavodă, was released from prison. He can resume his post as mayor after being convicted of abuse of office
Condemned in January to four years in prison for abuse of office, Liviu Negoiță, the former mayor of the city of Cernavodă, was released from prison after the High Court of Cassation and Justice admitted his appeal in cassation.

The supreme court determined that the act for which he had been convicted “is not provided for by the criminal law”annulling both the decision of the Constanța Court and that of the Court of Appeal, according to News.ro.
According to the ICCJ minute, “acquit the defendant Negoiţă Liviu Cristian (…) as the act is not provided for by the criminal law”.
The Supreme Court also ordered the cancellation of all forms of enforcement, as well as the lifting of the measure of confiscation of the amount of 9,307,790 lei.
“Cancel the forms of execution (…) and orders the immediate arrest of the defendant, if he is not detained or arrested in another caseă”, it is stated in the final decision of the supreme court.
At the same time, the ICCJ lifted the sequestration instituted on the assets of the former mayor.
The representatives of the Prefecture of Constanța confirmed that, following the final decision, Liviu Negoiță can resume his position as mayor of the city of Cernavodă, without the need for a new prefect's order.
Liviu Negoiță was sentenced in January by the Constanța Court of Appeal to four years in prison for continued abuse of office, after allegedly approving illegal payments of over 9.3 million lei to a sports club.î
DNA prosecutors had sent him to court for 33 ordinances considered illegal, issued between April 2017 and August 2019, when he was mayor of the city.
