“Pope Leo XIV made a statement on the occasion of the release of his first encyclical Magnifica Humanitas (Majestic Humanity), dedicated to the protection of human dignity, the ethical challenges of our time and the regulation of the field of artificial intelligence (AI). A fragment of the speech was published by Novini.LIVE on Telegram on May 25.
In his address, the pontiff said that AI is already significantly influencing the life of society and shaping the decisions that determine the coexistence of people.
Dad paid special attention to the development of autonomous weapons systems. More and more military technologies are moving beyond effective human control, he said.
Leo XIV also warned against the use of algorithms that could limit access to health care, employment and security due to biased or unfair data. In his opinion, such decisions can generate new “forms of exclusion” and “suffering.”
One of the central messages of the statement was the phrase: “Artificial intelligence needs to be disarmed.”
The pontiff explained that he deliberately used such strong language because current challenges require words that can “attract attention, awaken conscience and show the way forward for humanity.”
At the same time, Leo XIV emphasized that humanity should not be afraid of technology, but must always keep man and his dignity in the spotlight.
“We cannot be careless with our most powerful technical tools,” the Pope concluded.
