A Krasnoyarsk woman spent a week with a broken needle in her leg and ended up in hospital

25 May 15:20

A resident of the Krasnoyarsk Territory went to the Regional Clinical Hospital with foot swelling – a few days before, she stepped on a sewing needle.

The woman assumed that it was just a crumb, removed the small object and continued with her usual activities. Over the next days, she went to boxing training, climbed stairs (the equivalent of 200 floors) and tried on shoes.

As a result, the leg became very swollen, and the woman decided to see a doctor. An x-ray revealed a fragment of a needle in the soft tissues, which entered vertically, broke off and migrated deeper.

The surgeon on duty, Roman Egorov, successfully removed the foreign body. The operation went without complications, and the woman was discharged. The doctor warns: even with a small injection with a sharp object, the situation should not be underestimated. The needle is able to move deeper due to muscle contraction and reach tendons, blood vessels or bones. In addition, an unsterile needle can become a source of tetanus.

If there is any suspicion of a foreign body, doctors advise taking an x-ray in two projections and avoiding physical activity. It is also important to check the date of your last tetanus shot – booster shots are needed every 10 years.
