Liberals dramatically win the elections in Canada, a decisively influenced by Trump: “Our old relationship with the US is”

The result of the Monday's federal poll confirmed a spectacular return of the Liberals, which in January had no less than 20 percentage points following the Conservatives, before former Prime Minister Justin were announcing that he resigned and Donald Trump to start threatening with customs duties and the annexation of Canada, writes Reuters.

The Liberals of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carry have won the elections on Monday, although they will not be able to form the majority government they would have wanted to negotiate trade taxes with US President Donald Trump.

The Liberals won or were led in 167 constituencies, followed by conservatives who prevailed in 145 constituencies, the votes being still counted.

The Liberals needed to win 172 of the 343 places of the Commune Chamber for a majority that would allow them to govern without the support of a smaller party.

Even so, the prime minister welcomed the victory which until a few months ago seemed impossible, after nine years of liberal governance under his predecessor, Justin Trudeau.

“Our old relationship with the United States, a relationship based on constantly increasing integration, has ended,” Cary said in a victory speech in Ottawa.

“The open global trade system anchored by the United States, a system that Canada has been based on World War II, a system that, although not perfect, has contributed to the prosperity of our country for decades, has ended.”

“These are tragedies, but they also represent our new reality,” he said.

Cariy said the next few months will be difficult and require sacrifices.

“Anyone but not conservative”

Shachi Kurl, president of the Angus Reid Institute, a poll company, told Reuters that the victory of the Liberals depended on three factors.

“It was the factor” anyone, but not a conservative “, was the Trump tariff factor and then it was the departure of Trudeau, who allowed many center-left voters and traditional liberal voters to return to the party,” said Kurl, referring to the resignation of the former prime minister, whose popularity had declined significantly.

Cariy promised a harsh approach to Washington on customs duties and said Canada will have to spend billions to reduce its US addiction.

It remains to be seen what Cariy managed to do. Minority governments in Canada, writes Reuters, rarely last more than 2 and a half years.

Conservative leader Pierre Pilievre acknowledged his defeat and assured that his party would ask the government.

The result confirmed a spectacular return of the Liberals, which in January had no less than 20 percentage points following the Conservatives, before they were to announce that Trump also began to threaten Customs and Annexation of Canada.

“America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country,” said Cariy. “These are not vain threats. President Trump is trying to destroy us so that America can own us. That will never happen,” he said.

A wave of patriotism

Trump's threats have sparked a wave of patriotism that increased support for Cary, a newcomer in politics that previously drove two central banks in G7 states.

Trump reappeared as a campaign factor last week, declaring that he could increase a 25% customs fee for cars in Canada, because the US does not want them. He previously stated that he could use “economic strength” to make of Canada 51st state.

Cariy stressed that his experience in managing economic problems gives him the skills to negotiate with Trump, while Pilievre has exploited concerns about the cost of life, crime and real estate crisis.

In a post on Social Media, Monday, Trump has reiterated his call for Canada to become the 51st state.

“Good luck to the great people of Canada,” he said.

“Choose the man who has the power and wisdom to reduce your taxes by half, to increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the world, to increase your cars, steel, aluminum, timber, energy and all the others, with zero rates or the trumpm. years ago, ”he said.

Trump effect

The US tensions have made the supporters of two smaller parties, the new Democratic Party (NDP), left, and the separatist block Quebecois, to vote for the Liberals. The leader of NDP, Jagmeet Singh, acknowledged his defeat in his own district and said he intends to resign from the party leader.

Conservatives seemed about to win in the Toronto area, to prevent a majority liberal government, but Pilievre was behind its own district in the Ottawa area, the votes still count.

“We have not crossed the finish line yet,” Pilivre told his supporters in Ottawa.

“We know that change is needed, but change is difficult to achieve. It takes time,” he added.
