Democrats write a letter to Marco Rubio. They want explanations regarding Ziobro

The letter to Rubio was sent by Gregory Meeks and James Raskin, top Democratic representatives on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. The matter was reported by Reuters, which obtained the content of the letter sent on Friday.

On May 9, Ziobro left Europe and flew to the USA, and a day later he confirmed his stay overseas. On May 18, Reuters revealed Landau's role in issuing the visa, and on Friday, two Democrats sent a letter to Rubio.

Risk of crisis with Poland

In the opinion of the authors of the letter, the possible actions of the Deputy Secretary of State “are a serious abuse of power and disregard for legal US immigration procedures.” Democrats also stressed that granting the visa could constitute “an unprecedented level of interference in the domestic politics and judicial systems of two long-time U.S. treaty allies” — Poland and Hungary.

Meeks and Raskin warned that the US administration's treatment of Ziobro's case could cause serious tensions in relations with Warsaw. In the letter, they called on the Trump administration to comply with Polish requests to extradite the former minister.

Democrats' questions for Rubio

Democrats asked Rubio a number of specific questions, including: whether the president himself or his closest associates were involved in the decision to issue the visa and what were the grounds for granting it. They also demanded access to correspondence and documents exchanged between Landau, the Office of Consular Affairs and US diplomatic missions in Warsaw and Budapest. They are also interested in the possible role of the US ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose.

The congressmen asked the Secretary of State to respond in writing and to appear in person before both committees by June 21. So far, neither the State Department nor the White House have responded to requests for comment.

On May 18, Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, revealed that it was Landau who issued the order allowing Ziobro to enter the US. According to this information, the Deputy Secretary of State instructed the Department of Consular Affairs to issue a visa through the embassy in Budapest. He issued the order before the swearing in of Peter Magyar's government.
The agency's interlocutors noted that they had no knowledge that the president or the foreign minister were involved in the case. Landau, second in the hierarchy of the State Department, allegedly learned about the situation from the US ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, and believed that Ziobro was being unfairly pursued by Polish law enforcement authorities. One source indicated that he cited national security concerns to justify the urgency of the matter. Another informant added that the PiS politician received a journalist's visa.

Appeals from Minister Żurek

Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek said on Friday that he had written to the new Hungarian authorities asking to withdraw the asylum granted to Zbigniew Ziobro and Marcin Romanowski. The head of the ministry pointed out that if this happened, Ziobro could be deprived of the document on the basis of which he is currently traveling in the USA.

Żurek also recalled that the Polish side had already prepared an extradition request regarding the former minister. Minister Żurek pointed out that in the Ziobro case, the Polish side already has a provisional arrest order, although the practice of American federal courts varies.

— This is the case with Zbigniew Ziobro. But we know that the practice of federal courts varies, so the team of prosecutors will decide whether we wait until Ziobro's lawyers' appeals are heard and only then send an extradition request. We would like there to be no further formal shortcomings and for the federal courts not to return this application to us, the minister emphasized.

Charges against Zbigniew Ziobro

A PiS politician is a suspect in an investigation into irregularities in the Justice Fund. The National Prosecutor's Office charges him with leading an organized criminal group and using his position for criminal activities. In total, he has been charged with 26 crimes.

According to investigators' findings, Ziobro allegedly gave orders to his subordinates to violate the law in order to provide selected entities with subsidies from the Justice Fund. The prosecutor's office also accuses him of interfering in the preparation of competition offers and enabling money to be awarded to unauthorized entities.

At the end of 2025, when the Sejm agreed to the detention and temporary arrest of the former minister, and the prosecutor issued a decision to bring charges against him, Ziobro was no longer in Poland. In early 2026, the media revealed that the former prosecutor general from the period of the United Right government received international protection in Hungary during the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Escape possible via Milan

On May 10, Ziobro himself announced that he was in the USA. He assured that he did not escape from the country and that he got to the USA on the basis of a document received along with asylum granted to him by the Hungarian side.

The spokesman for the National Prosecutor's Office, Prosecutor Przemysław Nowak, announced on Wednesday that investigators already have official data regarding the former minister's departure. According to the findings, Ziobro left Europe on May 9 and flew to the USA from Milan. He used a visa defined as a “member of foreign media” – in the American sense. Earlier, TV Republika announced that the former Minister of Justice would serve as a political commentator for this station.
