Nearly 300 people climbed Everest on Wednesday. The number is a record

A record 274 people scaled Mount Everest via the Nepalese route on Wednesday, after this year's spring season got off to a late start due to a huge block of ice blocking the ascent route, the BBC writes.
Everest aspirants took advantage of the favorable weather conditions to try to reach the summit, tourism department official Khimlal Gautam told the Everest Chronicle. The climbs began at 03:00 local time and continued for 11 hours, he added.
Wednesday's record surpassed the previous record set on May 22, 2019, when 223 climbers scaled the mountain on the south side in Nepal.
Another 113 climbers summited the northern route in Tibet on May 22, 2019, but China closed the route to foreign climbers this season.
Nearly 500 foreign climbers have received permits to scale the 8,849m (29,032ft) peak this year – also a record – as experts warn of overcrowding and other safety risks.
