Why Kaja Kallas thinks the US, Russia and China 'don't like the European Union': 'We need to understand'

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the EU bloc would be an “equal power” with the US, Russia and China if united, which makes those countries reluctant to do so.

In remarks made on Sunday at the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn, she urged European Union states not to weaken the EU bloc by trying to reach bilateral agreements with the United States, according to Politico.

“They don't like the European Union, that's very clear,” said Kaja Kallas. “But we have to understand why they don't like the EU; why China doesn't like the EU; why Russia doesn't like it. It's because if we stay united, if we operate together, then we are equal powers, we are strong,” explained the head of EU foreign policy.

A divide and conquer strategy

The former Estonian prime minister said it was “of course easier” to interact with individual countries, which are much smaller, than with a bloc that can act as an equal power. Kallas believes that the speech like “my relations with you are great, but I don't like the European Union” is part of a divide and conquer strategy.

“I'm very worried, because sometimes I also see countries going this way,” she added. “The division really works,” warned Kaja Kallas.

Kallas urged member states to defend the EU bloc and said of the US, Russia and China that they “want to dismantle the European Union” because “we are much stronger when we are together”.
