Folk calendar

Arina Kapustnitsa, Arina Rassadnitsa

On this day, the memory of Irina (in the Russian tradition – Arina) of Macedonia is celebrated, who became the first woman revered among the great martyrs.

On Arina, as well as on Mavra, in Rus', seedlings were planted in beds – mainly cabbage and cucumbers. By the way, it was believed that only women should do this – and preferably completely alone, so that no one would jinx it. Having planted the first sprout of cabbage, it was covered with a large pot, and the pot with a white tablecloth, so that the forks turned out to be just as large, white and tight. Nettles were sown along the edges of the beds, which were supposed to scare away evil spirits and harmful insects.

Cabbage was one of the people's most favorite vegetables. There were many sayings about it: “Without cabbage, cabbage soup is not thick”; “Wisdom is in cabbage, strength is in cabbage”; “Why have a garden if you don’t plant cabbage?”

They also carried out other agricultural work on this day – for example, they burned the mowing to get rid of old, dried grass.

“Cabbage” was also the name given to one of the types of round dance, common in the northern regions. It is formed like this: a guy starts a song and forms a chain of players, taking one or the other by the hand.
