The coffin with Pope Francis's body will be moved today to St. Peter's Basilica, where the believers will be able to pay a last tribute before Saturday's funerals, the BBC reports.

The coffin in which the Pape Francis body is located will be transferred from the Santa Marta Chapel, where it lived from its 2013 choice to death, to Saint Peter Basilica, entering the central door, in a grand procession.

The ceremony accompanying the transfer from Santa Marta is expected to start at 09:00 (10, Romania time). The multitude of people began to bring to St. Peter's Square and in the surrounding areas before the procession from the Santa Marta Chapel.

The open coffin of the Pope will be placed in front of the large altar of the basilica covered by the monumental canopy of Bronze made by Bernini, a masterpiece of baroque art that has just been restored, notes AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

Until people can pay a last tribute to Pope Francis

For three days, people will be able to pass by his remains after the following program:

  • Wednesday, April 23 – from 11:00 to 24:00 local time
  • Thursday, April 24 – from 07:00 to 24:00 local time
  • Friday, April 25 – from 07:00 to 19:00 Local time

In the coffin, the pope wears a white and red cottage, and in his hands he has a rosary.

Tens of thousands of believers are expected to pay a final tribute. After the death of his predecessor, Instict XVI, on December 31, 2022, 200,000 people gathered in front of his remains before the funerals attended by about 50,000 believers.
