MegaFon has significantly increased the share of SIM cards with the Russian operating system

MegaFon has increased the share of SIM cards with the Russian operating system – today domestic solutions already account for more than 50% of all SIM cards purchased by the operator. They are tested and validated in the company’s own laboratory.

SIM cards with Russian software are not inferior in their characteristics to their foreign counterparts – both in terms of security and user experience. At the same time, the software of domestic SIM cards is fully compatible with MegaFon’s existing telecom infrastructure and subscriber identification algorithms.

During testing, SIM cards are checked against 10 key criteria. Among them are correct registration in the network, compliance with international standards, as well as stable operation in 2G, 3G, 4G and VoLTE networks. The operation of applets – microprograms that provide additional services for subscribers – is also checked. Tests are carried out on a large number of smartphone models, as well as in routers, tablets and smart watches, which allows us to confirm stable operation in various devices.

A full SIM card testing cycle takes less than six months, making it one of the fastest time-to-market processes. During this period, the vendor receives technical requirements, SIM cards undergo intermediate testing, and based on their results, the supplier finalizes them. After all stages are completed, the SIM cards are allowed for commercial use. Requirements for SIM card profiles are regularly updated taking into account business needs and changes in legislation.

In addition to SIM cards, the MegaFon laboratory conducts comprehensive testing of subscriber equipment – smartphones, push-button phones, tablets, laptops, routers, modems and smart watches. For example, one smartphone undergoes about 250 tests in four days. The quality of voice communications, data transfer, operation in networks of different generations, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, VoLTE, VoWiFi, as well as eSIM support are checked. Testing is carried out both for MegaFon’s own purposes and at the request of various equipment manufacturers entering the Russian market. MegaFon's retail network includes only devices that fully comply with the operator's requirements.

The MegaFon laboratory (Equipment Research and Testing Center) was created in 2008 in St. Petersburg. Every year it tests approximately 150 different devices. The laboratory premises have special shielded rooms protected from external electromagnetic influence, and the infrastructure includes its own base stations, a network core (2G/3G/4G) and a transport segment for Internet access.
