Political scientist Cristian Pîrvulescu explains the stakes of the Cotroceni consultations and the anticipated scenario: “The dismissal of the Bolojan Government is not an accident”

The consultations called by President Nicușor Dan for Monday, May 18, are taking place in a tense political climate, marked by the lack of a clear majority and the parties' refusal to support the options proposed by their opponents. The head of state insists on the formation of a “pro-Western majorities”, warning that he will not nominate a prime minister who could generate a new political crisis.

Despite the call for responsibility, the parties have already sent firm red lines, which complicates the negotiations and opens the way to the scenario of a technocrat prime minister, considered by political scientist Cristian Pîrvulescu a possible but unstable solution, according to News.ro
Cristian Pîrvulescu: “We are witnessing an institutional farce”
In an interview for the quoted source, the political scientist Cristian Pîrvulescu describes the current situation as a deep political crisis, generated by the tensions between the institutions and the inability of the parties to cooperate.
“This operetta is a farce in reality; our problem is institutional, it is a problem of the way we relate to the functioning of the government and institutions in Romania.”
According to him, the dismissal of the Bolojan Government is not an accident, but the expression of an endemic crisis.
A technocrat prime minister, likely but unstable solution
Although the parties publicly reject the idea, Pîrvulescu believes that exactly their vehemence indicates the direction of the president:
“The greater the vehemence, the more certain we are that that proposal is the one the president will decide on“, said the political scientist, adding that “the convergent attack against the independent prime minister is intended to greatly complicate the negotiation dates”.
According to him, the purpose of such a prime minister would be primarily economic: to calm the markets and offer guarantees to investors.
Among the names circulated are Radu Burnete (presidential advisor) and Şerban Matei (BNR). However, Pîrvulescu warns that such a government could have a short life, perhaps even shorter than the one led by Bolojan.
Early elections, “a false solution”
While some parties invoke the anticipated, the political scientist firmly rejects this option:
“The solution of going back to the polls is a false solution… it doesn't solve the problem, it only deepens it.”
Cristian Pîrvulescu emphasizes that the electorate cannot solve a crisis related to the architecture of power, not to current preferences.
Despite the deadlock, the political scientist estimates that Romania will have a government shortly:
“At the end of the month we have a government.”
