Shots were fired around 05:00 (local time) when an attacker shot dead 10 people. The suspect fled the scene but was pursued by law enforcement and fatally shot.
The city's mayor, Tom Arceneaux, said the entire community is devastated by the tragedy.
“We have grieving families, police officers affected, medical staff scarred by what happened. It is a tragedy that hits the whole community”, he said, according to the BBC.
The attack took place in several houses on the same street, and all the victims killed are minors. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or the attacker, but have said some of the victims were related to him.
After committing the attack, the suspect allegedly stole a car and tried to flee, being chased by the police in another neighborhood, where he was fatally shot.
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said the investigation is ongoing and is being conducted with the support of the Louisiana State Police and other agencies.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he was “deeply saddened” by what happened and thanked the emergency teams for their quick response.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, also described the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy”, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.
