Jannik Sinner (24, ATP No. 1) leads Daniil Medvedev (29, World No. 9) 6-2, 5-7, 4-2 in the second semi-final in Rome, with the match interrupted by heavy rain to resume on Saturday, May 16, not before 16:00. The women's final, Coco Gauff against Elina Svitolina, is scheduled for the same day.

Bad weather prevented the second semi-final of the Masters 1000 in Rome from being interrupted by rain in Sinner's 6-2, 5-7, 4-2 win over Medvedev. The duel will resume on Saturday, and the winner will face them in the trophy match on Casper Ruud6-1, 6-1 winner in the first semi-final against him Luciano Darderi.

One of the most storied rivalries in men's tennis today partially consumed its episode with No. 17 in the second semifinal in Rome. Perhaps paradoxically, of the two protagonists, the one who already had a title at the Foro Italico in his record is Medvedev, the 2023 champion.

Sinner is looking for his first triumph on Romanian clay, after last year's final, and reached the penultimate set without losing a set, dropping a maximum of 4 games in one set. The Russian, on the other hand, had complicated duels with Pablo Llamas Ruiz in the second round and especially with Martin Landalucein the quarter-finals, where his superior experience helped him come out on top.

It was the first match on clay between the two, a novel and suggestive detail, after 15 matches on hard and one on grass, with Jannik leading, 9-7.

Jannik Sinner, first set won decisively

The world leader started launched, detaching at 4-0with the opponent gaining only two points in that span. In the end, however, Daniil stopped the bleeding and began to calibrate his sensations on the field – he managed a range, another one, but the act definitely went to the main favorite, 6-2 in 32 minutes.

In the second half, however, the picture of the match acquired different nuances. With the Italian making more mistakes, almost uncharacteristically, and the Russian standing firm in the long exchanges, throwing in a short one every now and then, the first break was achieved by Medvedev.

He also had chances for a second and 4-0 on the table, but Jannik shot him, suffered and escaped safely. Then he hit dry on the return, recovering the break. However, the match had more balance, which was also restored on the table, 3-3 in front of an audience that enjoyed the tough, effort-consuming battle.

So they went, head to head, until 6-5 for Daniil, when a decisive effort from the Russian, with an inspired short diagonal, closed the act, 7-5. The decider was coming and what a difference compared to how the game had started!

The effort began to press, however, and each misstep could cost, especially three in a row, as happened to Medvedev in the third game of the deciding set. Seeing each other at 0-40 after the first two games, the Russian conceded, and the opponent fed off that early success.

to 3-2 in favor of the winner of the last five Masters 1000 tournaments, starting with Paris 2025, he received medical attention on his right thigh, during which Daniil spoke to the referee Aurelie Tourteasking for some clarifications. Then it started to rain. Loud. Umbrellas flourished in the stands and the match was eventually abandoned at 4-2 and advantage Daniil, who served.

After an hour's wait, during which the weather did not improve, the organizers decided to resume the game on Saturday, May 16, not before 16:00 (15:00 local time). The women's final is scheduled not before 18:00 (17:00 in Rome), Coco Gauff cons Elina Svitolina.
