In the Tomsk region, cases of encounters with owls have become more frequent. Experts attribute this to population growth due to the abundance of rats.

As Andrey Bazdyrev, director of the Strizh environmental center, explained to RIA Tomsk, due to the large number of rodents, owls lay 2.5 times more eggs. This explains the increasing frequency of encounters between city residents and owls, especially the great owl.
“If usually this is 1-3 eggs, then in 2024-2025 owls may lay up to 6-7 eggs,” Bazdyrev noted.
According to the ornithologist, owls in urban environments hunt not only rodents, but also pigeons, crows and rats. This helps them survive during periods when there is less prey in the natural environment.
Now the owls continue their period of migration, when young birds develop new territories, and adult individuals move to areas with better food supplies.
