Pussy Riot on Russia's “terrorists” list. Punishment for loud protests

The punk collective Pussy Riot has previously been banned in Russia as an “extremist” organization. On May 15, he was officially included in Rosfinmonitoring's list of organizations and individuals associated with “terrorism”.

Last December, a court in Moscow, during a closed session, accepted the request of the Prosecutor General's Office to recognize Pussy Riot as an “extremist” organization and ban its activities in Russia. As RIA Novosti reported, the prosecutor then argued that the reason was actions “posing a threat to state security.”

The punk group had been operating in Russia since 2011, organizing illegal performances in public places. The most famous scandal broke out in 2012, when, after a “punk prayer” in the Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow, the participants were searched, then detained and arrested.

In August of the same year, they were found guilty of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” and sentenced to two years in a penal colony.

Vocal opponents of the invasion of Ukraine

In the following years, Pussy Riot repeatedly organized political actions, among others protesting against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. One of the last ones took place at the beginning of May, just before the opening of the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale – together with the Ukrainian group Femen.

Most members currently live abroad. Last September, five of them were sentenced to prison in absentia from 8 to 13 years in a penal colony for spreading “false information” about the Russian army.
