Folk calendar

Boris and Gleb Sowers

The Day of Remembrance of the Passion-Bearing Princes Boris and Gleb is the first Orthodox holiday established in Rus'. Its history began in 1115.

Boris and Gleb (baptized Roman and David) were Russian princes, sons of the Kyiv prince Vladimir Svyatoslavovich. In the internecine struggle that broke out in 1015, they were killed by their elder brother Svyatopolk the Accursed. Boris and Gleb became the first Russian saints. Subsequently, they began to be considered intercessors of the Russian land.

In Rus', from this day on, they began to plant cucumbers and pumpkins. To make them grow bigger, they buried a mortar and pestle in the garden bed. In addition, on this day they continued to sow the fields. So they said: “Boris and Gleb are sowing grain.”

The nightingales begin to sing from Boris and Gleb. If they sing loudly and thoroughly, it means that summer is just around the corner. If the nightingale sings all night, the next day will be sunny. And if you hear the nightingale before the cuckoo, then you will live happily all summer.

Sometimes this day was also called “money day”, and St. Boris was also called “money day”. Merchants vigorously celebrated his memory in the hope of receiving profits for this throughout the year. A successful year was also promised by a successful sale of something on this day.
