In the city of Engels, Saratov region, aggressor country Russia, the consequences of an accident on the main sewer have been ongoing for more than two weeks. The publication “7×7” writes about this on May 14.
Due to the emergency, some residents were left without water, and the streets and courtyards were flooded with sewage. Local media are calling the situation a “fecal” emergency.
The accident occurred at the end of April on Mendeleev Street. According to authorities, a section of the main gravity sewer pipeline was destroyed. The water utility attributed the incident to power surges.
The exact number of residents affected by the accident is unknown. Authorities reported a decrease in water pressure in more than 100 apartment buildings, while local media and Telegram channels claimed that problems could affect almost the entire city of about 200 thousand people.
Sewage flooded the streets, basements of residential buildings, courtyards, areas of schools and kindergartens. Residents complain of a strong smell and fear the spread of infections. Despite statements from Rospotrebnadzor that the water complies with sanitary standards, city residents were advised to use only boiled or bottled water. The city also increased chlorination of water.
The state of emergency was introduced only on May 4, a week after the accident. To eliminate the consequences, an additional pumping station was delivered to Engels, but heavy rains prevented repairs. Authorities claim that water supply has already been restored and flooding is gradually being eliminated.
Local residents accuse officials of a slow response and have filed complaints with federal authorities. The media note that problems with the sewer system in Engels have been observed for several years: the collector has repeatedly failed, and residents have complained about its wear and tear even earlier.
Context
