Official: Romania has entered recession. The economy has decreased for two quarters in a row, INS data confirms

Romania has officially entered recession, according to information published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics, which indicates an economic decline of 1.5% in the first quarter of this year, after the decline of 1.5% in the last quarter of 2025 on a seasonally adjusted gross series.

Recession occurs when there are six consecutive months of economic decline.
Gross domestic product decreased in the first quarter of 2026 by 0.2% compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the same quarter of 2025, the Gross Domestic Product decreased by 1.5%, INS informs on Wednesday.
“Gross domestic product decreased in the first quarter of 2026 by 0.2%, compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the same quarter in 2025, the gross domestic product decreased by 1.5%”, the INS data show.
The gross domestic product decreased by 1.7% on the gross series and by 1.5% on the seasonally adjusted series compared to the same quarter of 2025;
The seasonally adjusted series of the quarterly gross domestic product was recalculated as a result of the inclusion of the estimates for the first quarter of 2026, with differences being recorded compared to the version published in Press Release no. 87 of April 9, 2026, states the INS.
