Associate Professor at Krasnoyarsk Medical University Yuri Tyazhelnikov told how he spent six months in the Bryansk region. The reserve officer served in one of the army combat reserve brigades as a commander of a medical platoon, writes the regional Ministry of Health.
Tyazhelnikov explains his decision to leave for the border region as a professional and civic duty. The medical platoon in a rifle battalion deals with everything: from providing first aid and training personnel to evacuating the wounded and monitoring the sanitary condition of the premises. I had to work around the clock in multitasking and unpredictability mode, Yuri emphasizes.
The patients were soldiers, volunteers and civilians. Doctors were consulted for internal diseases, exacerbations of chronic diseases, injuries, burns and frostbite.
“There were many fractures, including displacement, and injuries. And although I am not a traumatologist or a surgeon, I had to mobilize all my strength and abilities in order to prevent critical blood loss and transport the wounded to the hospital. There were no losses with me,” he recalls.
An example for Tyazhelnikov was his uncle, the flagship doctor of the Pacific Fleet, Colonel of the Medical Service Andrei Kruptsov. He operated on the Ob hospital ship in conditions of a force nine storm. “My uncle showed me that medicine is a universe; I came into the profession largely thanks to him,” says Yuri.
Now Krasnoyarsk State Medical University is preparing to introduce a mandatory course in tactical medicine. The classes will teach students to provide assistance in any, including extreme conditions. It is also planned to launch a retraining course in tactical medicine for already practicing doctors.
