Large avalanche at Bâlea Lac. “They can happen at any time of the day”

A large melting avalanche occurred on Sunday at Bâlea Lac, in the Făgăraș Mountains, the instability of the snow being accentuated, writes News.ro.

“Large melting avalanche at Bâlea Lake. Triggering area: the proximity of the Main Ridge to the west of Iezerul Caprei. Accumulation area: Bâlea lake surface”, reported on Sunday, the specialists who manage the “Avalanches in the Carpathians” Facebook page.

According to them, in conditions where the temperatures are positive and during the night, the snow layer is isothermal and in depth – it has a temperature close to 0°C – these avalanches can occur at any time of the day, regardless of momentary temperature fluctuations.

“The instability is accentuated, both by the water resulting from the melting and by the rain showers”, the specialists also said.

According to meteorologists, on Sunday, at 3:00 p.m., the snow cover at Bâlea Lac was 87 centimeters and the temperature was over 4 degrees Celsius.
