Thomas G. DiNanno serves as Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security at the US State Department and will attend the meeting on behalf of the US leader.
The summit will be co-chaired by Nicușor Dan and the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, the theme of this year's edition being “Delivering More for Transatlantic Security”, according to the Presidential Administration.
Although Donald Trump was invited to the summit, the American leader conveyed through a diplomatic letter the fact that he will not participate in the meeting in the Capital, instead appointing Thomas G. DiNanno to represent the USA, according to Digi24.
The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, as well as representatives of the Nordic states – Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Norway – were also invited to the meeting in Bucharest.
The stakes of the meeting and the strategic role of Romania
The summit will bring together the representatives of the nine Eastern Alliance states (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia). Key items on the agenda include:
– Reconstruction of Ukraine: Romania proposed the use of the bases at Mihail Kogălniceanu and Câmpia Turzii as logistical hubs for reconstruction efforts and post-conflict security guarantees.
– Cooperation with the USA: The strategic relationship was recently reaffirmed by the participation of President Nicușor Dan, as an observer, in the Peace Council initiated by Donald Trump.
Romania's humanitarian commitment
During recent international discussions, President Nicușor Dan emphasized the country's readiness to support the victims of conflicts, including in the Gaza area. Nicușor Dan mentioned the possibility of increasing the number of flights for the medical evacuation of children: “You can count on us”, he said at the end of his speech.
Background of Format B9
Launched in 2015 at the initiative of Romania and Poland, the B9 platform serves as a political coordination framework for the states on the eastern flank before the major NATO summits. This year's edition is seen as a decisive moment for the articulation of a common position on air defense and military mobility in the region.
