Iran's move as Donald Trump suspends 'Project Freedom'

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday, state news agency Xinhua reported, according to Reuters.

Araqchi's one-day visit comes a week ahead of US President Donald Trump's scheduled visit to Beijing for a summit with President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15.

Earlier this week, the US and Iran launched fresh attacks in the Persian Gulf as they battled for control of the Strait of Hormuz with mutual maritime blockades, threatening an already fragile truce.

Trump later said the US Navy would help the ships pass through the strait. But Project Freedom was suspended after Trump said on Tuesday that “great progress” had been made toward a deal with Iran.

There was no immediate reaction from Tehran to the leader's remarks from the White House.

Iran's foreign minister said Monday's attacks, which came after he said Tehran was considering Trump's request for talks, showed there was no military solution to the crisis.

Beijing, while maintaining a largely neutral stance on the conflict, has opposed attacks on Iran's sovereignty and has also facilitated mediation efforts.

China has repeatedly urged the US and Iran to maintain the ceasefire and lift restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz.
