A Romanian television is closing after 9 years: “The economic context is not a favorable one”

In today's meeting, the CNA will order the withdrawal of the license of Channel 33 television, which has not yet submitted a request for renewal. Contacted by Pagina de Media, the owner of Canal 33, Alexandru Răducanu, confirmed that the television is closing.

“Unfortunately, the context of the media market in Romania does not allow the existence of an independent news television. I believe that I have done the right thing and I prefer to withdraw from the media area”, declared Alexandru Răducanu.

Channel 33 has been broadcasting since March 16, 2017, and the law stipulates that it must come every nine years with a request for its extension. Răducanu confirmed that he did not submit these documents. As a result, the CNA members will order the license to be withdrawn.

“There were all kinds of discussions, really, but the economic context is not a favorable one for a businessman to invest in a field that is not profitable. I am no longer willing either. Television has been a source of expenses all these years”, he explained.

Financial problems

According to Pagina de Media, Channel 33 has faced financial problems recently. Răducanu was in discussions with several investors to take over the television, but they did not materialize.

One of the causes of the financial problems was the collaboration with Dan Diaconescu, whose show received several fines from CNA. The collaboration was stopped in October 2025 after six months.
