Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Monday, after a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, that a treaty with this country regarding defense cooperation will be signed on May 27. Poland will be an advocate of Great Britain's rapprochement with the EU, he added. He also announced a visit to Canada.

Tusk talked to Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the European Political Community summit in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan. Carney was the first leader of a non-European country to attend the summit.
– We have made the final decision with Prime Minister Starmer that this is it On May 27, the treaty between Poland and Great Britain will be signed. This will be a treaty that will really strengthen our cooperation, especially in the field of defense, but not only – Tusk told journalists.
– We have been negotiating this treaty for a long time, but at this time (…) it is very important to look for real partners with great potential who are ready for permanent military cooperation and in the broadly understood field of defense – said Tusk.
– Great Britain also wants – and Poland is a balanced partner here – to have a reliable lawyer when it comes to Great Britain's approach to the European Union – he emphasized.
He added that the mood in Great Britain has changed – now a clear majority of residents regret Brexit (the country's exit from the EU – PAP) and would like to strengthen ties with the EU as intensely as possible.
– Brexit happened, but, as Prime Minister Starmer told me, the mood has changed radically – Tusk noted. – Poland, for geopolitical reasons and traditionally due to the large number of compatriots in Great Britain, will work for such rapprochement. – he declared.
– Prime Minister Starmer heard my positive response to his request for Poland to be the leader of this process of renewed rapprochement (of Great Britain to the EU – PAP) – Tusk announced.

The head of the Polish government also announced that he would soon pay an official visit to Canada. He declared his readiness to cooperate on a format that would bring Canada, Norway and Great Britain closer to the EU.
– We all see that something has changed in the world and more and more leaders are starting to wonder how to build bonds between countries that have similar views on geopolitics and fundamental values in this new reality – he noted.
He stressed that this would not be an alternative to European-American relations. – If we want a safe world, especially our free world, there is no alternative to Europe-US cooperation – he emphasized. He admitted that “Donald Trump's presidency is obviously a very challenging experience.” – However, this does not change my belief, and not only mine, that Polish-American and European-American relations are the highest priority – noted the Prime Minister.
He added that he would visit Canada to clarify the details of bilateral agreements. – We have established new forms of cooperation with the Prime Minister of Canada, including cooperation in the field of security, military, energy, including nuclear and renewable energy. We will also certainly intensify the cooperation of our secret services, Tusk said.
– We also agreed that I will soon pay an official visit to Canada to finalize all the details of these agreements and the new, elevated relations with Canada – he noted.
The Polish Prime Minister told journalists that he was joking that he was favorable to the idea of Canada joining the EU. (PAP)
