A car drove into a crowd in Leipzig. One person is dead, 25 are injured

One person was killed and 25 injured in the center of Leipzig in eastern Germany, where a car plowed into a group of people on Monday. The perpetrator was arrested. According to the media, he allegedly behaved in a way that indicated possible mental problems.

The incident took place on Monday on Grimmaische Street in the center of Leipzig. Initial reports indicated that around 17, a car hit a group of people there. Radio Leipzig reported that 25 people were injured.
Initially, local police and media reported two deaths, but the Saxony police corrected these reports. The latest information shows that one person died in the accident.
The perpetrator was arrested and, according to the police, he no longer poses a threat. So far, the services have not provided details about his identity or possible motives.
As reported by Radio Leipzig, witnesses describe the perpetrator as an approximately 35-year-old man with a fair complexion. He was probably German; he had numerous tattoos and was wearing a light shirt.
The public broadcaster from central Germany MDR, citing witnesses, reported that the car allegedly hit people at a speed of 70 to 80 km/h. According to their reports, there was chaos on site immediately after the incident. Emergency services were dispatched to the area of the tragedy.
The tabloid “Bild” reported that during the arrest, the driver allegedly behaved in a way indicating possible mental problems.
The cause of the incident is not known yet.
Grimmaische Strasse leads from the central Augustusplatz square towards Leipzig's pedestrian zone. Nearby are the University of Leipzig and the Church of St. Nicholas – one of the key places of the peaceful revolution in the GDR in 1989.
