Trump stirs the waters again with an AI image of him and Cabinet members in the symbolic pool at the Lincoln Memorial vandalized on the same day

A series of AI-generated images published by Donald Trump has sparked controversy, especially since one of them, in which he is with important members of his cabinet, only in bathing suits, appeared on the very day that the pool at the Lincoln Memorial was vandalized.

President Donald Trump has caused new controversy after he published several images generated with the help of artificial intelligence on the Truth Social platform. Among them stood out an unusual photo in which the American leader appears relaxing in the reflection pool at the Lincoln Memorial, together with members of his Cabinet.

The image, posted without explanation at 11:03 p.m., shows Trump smiling, with his thumb raised as a sign of OK, while lying on a golden inflatable deckchair, placed in the middle of the pool whose role is purely aesthetic and symbolic, being designed precisely to emphasize the monumentality of the famous Lincoln Memorial (hence the name reflection pool – no).

Next to him appear Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, captured in similar poses. Also present in the frame is an unidentified woman, possibly also generated with the help of artificial intelligence, wearing sunglasses and a blue-and-white checkered bathing suit.

The sharing of this image comes at a time when the reflecting pool is undergoing an extensive rehabilitation process, after work was accelerated at the initiative of Donald Trump and is being coordinated by Doug Burgum, with an estimated cost of 1.5 million dollars. The project aims to remediate seepage from the pool's granite foundation by applying a new industrial coating, described as “American flag blue”, designed to restore and seal the structure.

Donald Trump used the occasion to resume criticism of previous administrations, which he holds responsible for the degradation of the Lincoln Memorial's impressive reflecting pool, and promised that the entire site would be fully restored by the United States' 250th anniversary on July 4.

“Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and I are working on fixing the absolutely filthy Reflecting Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. This work was supposed to be done by the Biden administration, but Sleepy Joe (“Sleepy Joe” – phrase often used by Trump to address Joe Biden – no) doesn't know what “CLEAN” or proper maintenance means – the President and the Secretary know!”, Donald Trump wrote.

In the same series of posts, Trump also shared other images, including one suggesting the pool was in poor condition during former President Barack Obama's tenure, as well as others depicting what the area would look like once the work is complete.

However, the context in which the images were published amplifies the controversy. Also on Friday, the Reflecting Pool area was vandalized with large graffiti that read “86 47”.

The message has drawn mixed interpretations, with the number “86,” frequently used to indicate removal or decommissioning, being seen by some Republicans as a possible coded threat to the president.

The situation is all the more sensitive as it comes shortly after the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey in a case related to a social media post last year in which he published an image of seashells arranged to form “8647,” which authorities interpreted as a potentially threatening message.

American authorities intervened quickly after the vandalism incident. According to a National Parks Police spokesman, the area has been secured and covered to allow for clean-up and an investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances of the incident.
