A megayacht believed to belong to one of Russia's richest oligarchs passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, according to reports citing tracking data.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments normally enter, has been closed by Iran amid its war against Israel and the US, while President Donald Trump ordered a freeze on Iran's oil exports, i23News writes.
The Nord, a 142-meter yacht known to be one of the largest in the world, left the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai on Friday, according to data provided by marine information provider MarineTraffic, and is heading to Muscat, Oman, the data shows.
Nord's owner is Alexey Mordashov, the majority shareholder and CEO of Severstal, the Russian steel and mining giant.
The yacht reportedly took the route past Iran's Larak Island, which is understood to be a route used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to control access to the strait.
Mordashov, who is believed to have close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the US, Britain and the European Union after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
