From the coming summer, tourists visiting Berlin will be able to win small prizes for collecting garbage or traveling in an environmentally friendly way, informed the Visit Berlin agency, the official institution responsible for promoting tourism in the German capital.

The program, called “BerlinPay”, is expected to focus on Berlin's waterways this year. The Spree River flows through the German capital and is crossed by numerous canals. There are also several dozen lakes in the city, and the largest one, Mueggelsee, has an area of 7.4 square kilometers.
“We want to make responsible behavior more visible and reward it. People who act consciously on and on the water, for example by collecting garbage, taking care of the neighborhood or supporting social projects, will receive awards from the program partners. These will be small benefits or unique Berlin experiences,” it says on the website addressed to potential sponsors.
Visit Berlin is still looking for partners who could take part in the program and enable tourists to receive rewards. Restaurants, hotels and cultural institutions are invited to cooperate.
The organizers will present more details of the program in mid-May.
The model for the Berlin initiative is the one already operating in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. As part of “CopenPay”, tourists can receive small benefits for proving ecological behavior, including free cruises and bicycle rentals. (PAP)
