The choice of a new UN Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) arouses more and more interest. Among the candidates included, among others Marshal of the Polish Sejm Szymon Hołownia.
Szymon Hołownia, who officially announced his candidacy at the end of September, is not the only claimant to take this position. According to media reports, the candidates also included:
– Ahmet Yildiz – Turkish diplomat with many years of experience in working with refugees, including in Iraq and Syria, currently acting as the Turkish ambassador at the UN.
– Anne Hidalgo – The first woman in the position of a meter of Paris.
– Nicole de Moor – a Belgian politician who, as the secretary of asylum and migration, co -created the European pact on migration and asylum.
– Suzanne Burgener – Swiss diplomat, former UN envoy for Burma.
– Niels Annen – German politician, close associate of Olaf Scholz, who has experience in managing international development projects.
Interestingly, he also joined the group of candidates Roman Mazura humanitarian activist who currently manages the Floor4africa program. In the past, Masuria was a politician associated with the Hołownia group.

Ahmet Yildiz (61 years) can boast of a long diplomatic career and experience in managing humanitarian crises. His work in such regions as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq and Syria gives him an advantage in the context of the challenges facing Unhcr.
Anne Hidalgo (66 years old), Mer Paris since 2014, previously associated with the International Work Organization (MOP). Her meetings with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres suggest that her candidacy can be seriously considered.
Nicole de Moor (41 years) represents a younger generation of politicians, but her contribution to shaping the migration policy of the European Union during the Belgian presidency in 2024 may be its advantage.
Suzanne Burgener (62 years) i Niels Annen (53 years old) are experienced diplomats who can count on the support of their countries. Burgener is an expert in the field of international law, and Annen has been behind her years of work in the German government.
