Russians consume four times more sugar than normal

24 April 19:40

Russians consume four times more sugar and 2.5 times more salt than recommended levels. This was stated by the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko.

“So far in our country, the volume of sugar consumption is four times higher than the recommended standards. Also, the amount of salt consumption is 2.5 times higher than the recommended norms,” Murashko said.

The head of the Ministry of Health warned Russians that nutrition and physical activity directly affect life expectancy.

The World Health Organization recommends limiting the intake of free sugars (added to foods and drinks) to 5-10% of daily calories, which is approximately 25-50 grams (about 5-10 teaspoons) for an adult of normal body weight. As for salt, the recommended amount should not exceed 5 grams per day (about one teaspoon), which is equivalent to 2 grams of sodium. The excess of these indicators, recorded by the Ministry of Health, is explained not only by the love of pickles and sweets, but also by the abundance of “hidden” salt and sugar in processed products: sausages, semi-finished products, sauces, ready-made breakfasts and sweet carbonated drinks.

Earlier, Oksana Drapkina, the chief freelance therapy specialist of the Ministry of Health, reported on the increase in the number of overweight children in Russia. The steady increase in childhood obesity is now more pronounced in boys, she said. Moreover, obesity that occurs in childhood most often persists into adulthood.
