The message posted by Bolojan just a few minutes before Nicușor Dan announced the conclusions of the consultations

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared on Wednesday evening that the data published by Eurostat regarding Romania's total deficit, which shows that it decreased from 9.3% in 2024 to 7.9% in 2025, proves that “the direction is correct” and “the economy is stabilizing without putting pressure on the future of the next generations”.
“It would be a shame to go back to where we left off,” the liberal prime minister wrote in a post on Facebook at 9:21 p.m., just a few minutes before the statements made by President Nicușor Dan following the consultations convened with the leaders of the governing coalition against the backdrop of PSD's decision to withdraw its support for Ilie Bolojan.
Bolojan said that the decrease recorded by the deficit is “important” and “came from the measures taken in the second part of last year to reduce expenses and increase revenues, but also from the use of European funds and the adjustment of investments from the PNRR”.
“Romania still has the largest deficit in the European Union, but it also had the largest correction. Reducing the deficit is not an end in itself, but a necessary step to put the country's finances on a sound footing,” added the liberal.
A model that “could not continue”
The Prime Minister stated that Romania, for many years, “has spent more than it could afford, and the debt has constantly increased”.
“This year, only the interest on past loans reaches approximately 60 billion lei, equivalent to the cost of a highway like the Moldova Highway. This model could no longer continue. Now we are starting to change this direction and regain control over the economy,” continued Ilie Bolojan.
He noted that “we need this adjustment so that the economy no longer depends on expensive debt, but on investment, work and competitiveness”.
“Each percentage point reduced from the deficit, i.e. approximately 20 billion lei, means less money paid on interest and more money for development, infrastructure and public services,” explained the prime minister.
“It will show in the standard of living”
Ilie Bolojan admitted that the period is a “difficult one, in which the effort is shared at the level of the entire society”, and he thanked “everyone for their patience and sacrifice”.
“The faster the correction is, the faster a healthy economic growth can start, and this will be seen in the standard of living. At the same time, the borrowing costs for Romania can decrease,” Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan also declared.
