The UN denounces “Russia's unparalleled contempt for the lives of civilians”, after “the bloodiest attack against children found from the triggering of the invasion”

The High Commissioner of the United Nations for Human Rights on Sunday denounced “Russia's unlimited contempt for civilians”, after bombing on Krivoi Rog, the bloodiest attack against children after the Russian invasion against Ukraine in 2022.
“The use by the Russian Federation of an explosive weapon with a large range in a densely populated area-and without any apparent military presence-demonstrates without limits for the lives of civilians,” wrote Volker Turk in a statement, evoking these attacks to be a war crime, one of the most serious international law.
A team of the High Commissioner moved to the place of the attack on Saturday, one day after the bloody blow, documented the damage and established the names and identity of the killed children.
“This is the bloodiest attack on some children found by the high commissioner after triggering the large -scale invasion in February 2022,” emphasizes Volker Turk.
“It is an unimaginable horror: nine children were killed, most of them were playing in a park, skis of the military weapon that exploded above them,” Turk expressed his indignation.
“Only one explosion cost the life of 18 people on a warm Friday evening at Krivoi Rog, while families gathered near a playground, a restaurant and residential buildings,” he stressed.
Volker Turk totally rejects the justification advanced by Russia on a military presence in that place.
“All witnesses said that there was no military presence at the restaurant or in the area at the time of the blow,” the press release, which states that, even if the military were present, the belligerents have the obligation to show discernment when there are civilians in the area.
The High Commissioner urged the outbreak of a “fast, complete and independent” investigation.
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski denounced the US “weak” reaction to rocket attack on his native city of Krivoi Rog, in the center of Ukraine, an attack that made 18 dead and 72 injured, of which many children. The US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, was declared “terrified” by this “ballistic missile” attack, but without mentioning the Russian origin.
