On this day, Orthodox Christians commemorate 33 martyrs, including Terentius, Pompius, Africanus and others. They suffered for their faith in the 3rd century.
In Rus' it was believed that the sun on this day should appear in a haze – that is, in fog. This is where the nickname of Saint Terenty came from. If the sun at sunrise was surrounded by haze, then the year promised to be fruitful, and if the sky turned out to be clear, the peasants believed that they would have to plow the field and sow it again.
The spring roadlessness was in full swing, streams were flowing everywhere, the clay and soil were softening. People said: “The road to Terentiy is collapsing”; “There's dirt all around – you can't drive through, you can't walk through.”
