The fall of the Bolojan Government. “PSD is like a cat that looks in the mirror and sees a lion”

The President of USR, Dominic Fritz, stated that the ministers of the party will remain in the government, and tomorrow he will meet with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan so that PNL and USR coordinate in the coming days. At the same time, Fritz told the PSD people that it is time to get used to governing in coalitions, even if now he has become “a cat that looks in the mirror and sees a lion”.
Key statements by Dominic Fritz
“A cynical and grotesque show, completely inappropriate for the moment, like an election party where the PSD gave the impression that it was happy to destroy something and trigger one of the worst political crises in the history of Romania”, said Dominic Fritz referring to the event at which the PSD decided to withdraw its political support to Ilie Bolojan.
Fritz believes that the reason for PSD's approach is the fact that the party has lost control over European money and the budget.
“He is lying to himself that he is still that big party that can decide the fate of Romania alone. The PSD is like a cat that looks in the mirror and sees a lion. It has to get used to the thought that it can only govern in a coalition,” said Fritz.
The USR leader claims that Ilie Bolojan is not the only target, PSD is trying to change the “reformist path” that Romania has taken.
“What is happening now? This is not just a question about a man, but what PSD actually wants for the Romanians and with whom they would like to deliver for the Romanians. It seems that they do not want with the current coalition partners. If they want a coalition to restore corruption, of the networks, they must say it. They must say clearly what they want to do next,” continued Fritz.
He stated that USR will no longer negotiate with PSD to form a new government if it causes the dismissal of the Bolojan government through a motion of no confidence.
“We cannot return to negotiations with the PSD if it initiates a no-confidence motion and causes the dismissal of this government. What guarantee would we have that the PSD does not betray again and again? For now, this government is still standing and the PSD must explain to us how they want to govern Romania. We remain on the barricades”, continued Dominic Fritz.
“Ilie Bolojan will not resign and we will support him, very clearly. I see no reason for Ilie Bolojan to resign (…) My mandate is to hold official talks with the PNL and I want that to happen tomorrow. As two equal partners, to coordinate well, we will start some very well-synchronized discussions with the PNL. I expect that we will also discuss with the other parties and I am sure that Mr. President will also want to hear our position,” said Fritz.
Regarding possible early elections, the president of USR said that it is an option with lower chances, but it can be “a legitimate solution” if a stable coalition cannot be formed.
Finally, regarding the scenario of the rotation of premiers, Fritz assessed that, under the current conditions, it is unlikely.
“Now that the PSD no longer considers this protocol to be valid, I hardly see an option in which the PSD will come up with a nomination for prime minister in April 2027”, concluded Dominic Fritz.
Dominic Fritz's conference will be organized a little later in the evening, after the press statements to be made by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan at the PNL headquarters.
Sources from the PNL claim for HotNews that, in the meeting that is still ongoing, all the heads of branches who took the floor expressed their support for Ilie Bolojan. At the same time, the statements originally expected at 8:00 p.m., were postponed by a few tens of minutes, because the meeting of the liberals did not end. At the moment, it is not clear how long the head of government will appear in front of the media.
Original news: PSD decided today, in a consultation with an expected result, to withdraw political support for Prime Minister Bolojan. “We will act”, said Sorin Grindeanu at the end of the meeting.
In parallel, a PNL meeting was organized at the party headquarters in Modrogan. Shortly before it began, several PNL leaders said, again, that the party would stand behind Ilie Bolojan even after PSD withdrew its political support.
During the meeting, Ilie Bolojan thanked his colleagues for not replying to the PSD and said that the social democrats started the attacks in the fall: “Probably, based on the polls, which show that the PSD is no longer at the level it had at the time of the elections,” said the prime minister, according to several liberal sources.
Ilie Bolojan has repeatedly stated that he will not resign, and PSD has warned that, in this scenario, he will withdraw his ministers from the Government.
Fritz's newest message
Dominic Fritz said that the formation he leads will defend “with all his might” this government that has begun to reform the state and “turn off the taps” and drew the attention of the social democrats that the outbreak of a political crisis will impoverish the country even more.
“You claim to leave the government to protect poor people. By triggering a political crisis, you will impoverish the country even more. We lose 10 billion euros from the PNRR. The deficit and interest rates will explode. Everything will become more expensive. Jobs will disappear. You are making power plays on the backs of the people you say you are protecting. What cruel hypocrisy. The truth is different. You hope to profit from the chaos. Let trigger the political crisis, let everything be as it was before, as in the time of Ciuca and Ciolacu! The Romanians said a clear NO. They don't want us to go back from where we left,” the USR leader wrote in a message published on his Facebook page.
Fritz announced that his formation is not giving up the fight.
“USR will defend with all its might this government that has begun to reform the state and turn off the taps. We do not give up the fight when we have just started the cleaning. We owe it to those who have no more patience with a country where we take one step forward and two steps back. For your cynical schemes, don't count on us. Who can count on us: all Romanians who want justice and prosperity. We will fight for them to the end, however necessary,” he stated he.
