Russian border guards have received the right to study the contents of smartphones and laptops entering the country. However, employees can only ask passengers to show correspondence, and not force them to do so. About this kp.ru said lawyer Maria Yarmush.
The specialist noted that Russians will not be able to refuse such a request, citing the constitutional right to personal privacy. Otherwise, the citizen may be detained for 48 hours under Article 14 of the Law “On Police”.
“The basis is suspicion of committing a crime. During this time, a court decision can be prepared, and the citizen can seek help from a lawyer,” the lawyer explained.
In addition, border guards have the right to inspect a citizen’s belongings. This is a more serious legal procedure that does not require the voluntary consent of the citizen.
