Meeting with Tusk
Macron's visit to Poland will take place on April 20, exactly one year after Warsaw and Paris signed the Treaty of Nancy, which provides, among other things, mutual obligations in the field of military support in the event of an attack on either country. The highlight of the French president's stay will be a meeting with Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Gdańsk.
According to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, this is not Macron's first visit to Poland, although he will visit Gdańsk for the first time. So far, the incumbent president of France visited Poland twice – in 2020 and 2024 – each time in Warsaw, at the invitation of then-president Andrzej Duda.
Talks about the arms sector
The talks in Gdańsk are to focus on three main areas of cooperation: defense, energy, culture and science. In the sphere of security, the development of the European defense industrial base is of key importance. As reported by a source from the Élysée Palace, talks are planned on the implementation of EU programs supporting the defense sector, as well as the signing and announcement of several partnerships, including in the area of military communication satellites.
The agenda will also include issues related to the so-called forward nuclear deterrence, intended to strengthen the security of allies in Europe. The topics to be discussed include: early warning systems, air defense and long-range strike capabilities.
The second nuclear power plant in the game
The political delegation will be accompanied by representatives of French business. These will include, among others: heads of EDF and Thales corporations. EDF is responsible for delivering steam turbines to the first nuclear power plant in Poland, built by the American Westinghouse. At the same time, the French group is seeking participation in the project to build the second Polish nuclear power plant, which is currently at the stage of selecting a location and negotiating with potential partners.. France competes in this area, among others. with companies from the USA, Canada and South Korea.
– We are at the beginning of this process, but we remain a motivated and credible candidate, ready to offer comprehensive and integrated solutions – said a source close to the French president.
