The European Union intends to transfer an amount of EUR 2.5 to 2.7 billion to Ukraine after the country's parliament finalized the necessary reforms last week, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos announced on Thursday.

During an event accompanying the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington, Kos explained that these funds will be disbursed from the EU instrument for Ukraine, which is separate from the EUR 90 billion loan blocked so far by Hungary.

She also assured that after the elections in Hungary, which led to the removal of Prime Minister Viktor Orban from power, the EU would certainly provide this loan to Ukraine.

– The chances that Ukraine will receive a loan of EUR 90 billion are 100 percent, and we have already established contact. I am very happy because I can finally keep my word and the European Union can deliver what we promised. Sometimes it takes a while, it's true. But we fulfill what we promise, said Kos, who appeared together with the Minister of Finance of Ukraine, Serhiy Marchenko.

“There is a plan for Ukraine in which they have to carry out 173 reforms, and if they implement them, we can give them money,” Kos later told Reuters.

Marchenko said that Ukraine's financial gap of $52 billion in 2026 will be covered as soon as the EU loan becomes available, but added that the government in Kiev is still in talks on filling the expected gap in 2027. (PAP)
