Reaction after Nicușor Dan's appearance on Thursday evening: “Fear over Romania”

Nicușor Dan said Thursday evening that he did not come to Mircea Lucescu's funeral in order not to politicize it. He wouldn't have succeeded.

“You go to birthday parties if you're invited, to funerals you go alone if you feel you have to.” It's true what Rinat Ahmetov said, when he was asked how he came to Mircea Lucescu's funeral. He came of his own free will, uninvited, because funerals are not compulsory. It was obviously not mandatory for Nicușor Dan either.

What impressed the president

Many people noticed the absence of the President of Romania. In the two days when the coffin of the former coach Mircea Lucescu was placed at the National Arena, more than 15,000 Romanians and foreigners came to pay their respects and say goodbye to Lucescu.

The vast majority were simple people, those who admired and appreciated the one who was a very good footballer, then an exceptional coach. But there were also many public figures, from the sports area and beyond.

Thursday evening, in Sebastian Zachmann's Europa FM show, Nicușor Dan was asked why he did not participate. And he said, first: “I was impressed by the harmony that this unfortunate event caused in the world of football. The fact that everyone was extraordinarily decent, they went with their families, is a good thing for Romania. When good things happen, we have to salute them.”

Nice, but still doesn't answer the question.

After which, Nicușor Dan added: “I think it was an emotional moment, all those days when the casket was at the National Arena, and I didn't want to take the event into a political area, through my eventual presence.”
