According to local authorities, the armed attack was committed by a 14-year-old eighth grader. He brought several weapons to school in a backpack, after which he entered two classrooms and opened fire on students. Subsequently, the attacker died – according to the preliminary version of the investigation, he could have shot himself during a panic, but the exact circumstances of his death are still being established.
Law enforcement officers detained the teenager's parents. It was also established that the weapon could belong to the family – the attacker's father is a former police officer. In total, the student, according to preliminary data, had five firearms and seven magazines with him.
The authorities announced a large-scale investigation into all the circumstances of the tragedy, in particular how the weapon ended up in the hands of a child. The region has also introduced a ban on the publication of materials on the case to maintain the secrecy of the investigation.
The Turkish Ministries of Internal Affairs, Justice and Education sent special commissions to Kahramanmaraş. At the same time, safety measures in schools and possible systemic causes of the tragedy are being checked.
This is the second such incident in Turkey, reports Reuters. According to the agency, on April 14, at least 16 people (teachers, schoolchildren, a canteen worker and a police officer) were injured as a result of a shooting at a school in the city of Siverek (Sanliurfa province). The investigation claims that a 19-year-old former student of the institution opened fire, after which he committed suicide.
