The 1980s song “Voyage Voyage” by Desireless, often reinterpreted, was used by the Iranians to mock Donald Trump. The hairstyle and the lyrics have changed, but the melody is easily recognizable. Through the “magic” of social networks, the hit became a tool of Iranian propaganda, writes News.ro.
“I've had everything, I've also had Macron…”, complains the French singer, contacted by the BFM TV channel, already used to such situations. “I refuse to have my song used without my consent, let alone by politicians,” she adds.
In the video for this parody, himself very political, “I will never let you down / The Strait of Hormuz must be closed,” sings a Donald Trump dressed in a 1980s hairstyle and a multi-colored jacket. The chorus “Voyage Voyage” is replaced with “Blockade blockade”.
Although it is not known how the Iranians found out about the song, it is unlikely that they paid royalties.
The song was a huge success in France, where 500,000 copies were sold, but also in several European countries, such as Germany (250,000 copies), Austria, Norway and Spain (100,000 copies). It has been the subject of countless covers, even recently by Barbara Pravi or Jérémy Frérot.
In February 2025, an AI-generated parody video featuring Emmanuel Macron was played by Desireless. Although the president stated that this “rather made him laugh”, the singer did not find it funny at all.
Performed in 1986 by Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop, better known as Desireless, the song “Voyage Voyage” was written by lyricist Jean-Michel Rivat and composed by him together with Dominique Dubois. The song was originally intended for Michel Delpech. The song appeared on Desireless' first album, released in 1989, entitled “François”.
